Kham
or Koh Kham is a small island located southward of sattahip district,
Chonburi province. The place is approximated 9 kilometer away of shore; it will
take just only 45 minute by boat and also situated westward away from Sameasan
Island about 3 kilometers with 15 minute by boat. The figure of Kham Island is
similar to the letter “H” in English, covering the area of 97,600 square meters
and under the administration of Coast guard department, Royal Thai Navy.
The
beauty of the sea around the island and the perfect nature are the key points
that attract the tourists to come to this place. There are two major beaches;
the first is north beach and second is the south beach. The sand on the north
beach is a bit powdered, ideal for swimming and other activities whereas the
south beach is quite rough, fully buried with pebbles and coral ruins.
The origin of Koh Kham
In
1993, Royal Thai Navy established the marine national park project at sattahip
as well as nearby area and focused the island as a first priority for aquatic
national park due to the ecology suitability and the hydrographic repletion
which is perfect for the progress of coral. The place is also not too far from
the coast as well as convenient for traveling. Deep down under the aquatic
park, there will be the abundant of coral reef scattered around under the sea.
The place recommended for snorkeling is in the south of the island which has
antler coral, table coral and brain coral with the depth level at 3-6 meters
make this wonderful for snorkeling or diving. Besides, there will be also
beautiful fishes and other marine life which reflected Koh Kham
identity.
The
main point of Koh Kham besides the plentiful shallow coral is that this
is the first place in Thailand that houses the degenerated coral from Tao Mhor
Island so as to develop and increase the coral reef in the relapsed area. It is
apparent that majority of them are still alive and growing up.
The
coral reef area on the Koh Kham is totally 83,000 square meters,
categorized by coral types, 50,000 square meters of antler coral, 30,000 square
meters of table coral, and 3,000 square meters of other corals. In the first
examination, it is indicated that there are around 20,000 square meters of good
coral and the deteriorated coral is covering around 60,000 square meters. The
coral in this part has been repaired and increased for 14,300 square meters.
The
activities in Khan Island are considered as Eco-friendly trip and it is a one

island will not be available on Tuesday and Friday.

Recommendation
To safely travel to Koh
Kham by boat is significantly related to the weather, The coast guard is
subjected to alter the travel schedule without prior notice as the trip may be
postponed or canceled due to bad weather.
The beaches and the sea in
the Koh Kham are similar to Bangsean, Pattaya,Hua Hin, but the
difference is that there are the coral which can be appreciated by glass-bilge
boat (without getting wet) or snorkeling, you can find economy diving gears
available for rent in the shops on the island. But if you wish to drink or eat
in the island, do not do that as it will be a big waste of money.
The Eco-friendly trip needs
to be advised, please keep in mind that you must behave as a civilized Thai
people and preserve the place for our next generations.
While you are snorkeling, please do not touch or
step on the coral, you may not be aware that the 1 centimeter of coral
development takes time for a year.
